Russian trolls have rigged the 2016 US presidential election!

This is how they did it.

Chapter 1: What did they do?

In October of 2017, the US government announced that Russian trolls had indeed orchestrated the hacking of polls and the Democratic Committee. These hacks included damaging revelations about Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee. These hacks were, unsurprisingly, aimed to bolster Donald Trump's success in the election and damage Clinton's. The hackers themselves targeted specific people groups that were obviously going to vote for Hillary Clinton, and in specific states such as Ohio or Tennessee that could change the election.

Chapter 2: How did they do it?

Before the election, ads had been released on Facebook which made Clinton a laughingstock, along with revealing other things that Clinton had done. Along with that, an app was released which poked fun at Hillary Clinton. The app consisted of three levels which included: Helping Clinton recover precious spam emails and firing Clinton as far away from the White House as possible. These hacks, advertisements on Facebook, and the Clinton app gave Trump slight advantages in the election.

Chapter 3: How could I be a target to these types of hacks, and how can I "battle" it?

Because these hackers targeted specific age groups, I could be in one of those age groups that they target. Hackers only do these types of hacks because they want their political view or religious view to gain ground in the platform they are hacking. In this example, it was Facebook they decided to hack. They could look at your likes and dislikes and decide if this is the right person to send something like an anti-YouTube ad at. This made their hacking so much more efficient, because then they could pinpoint specific people. To battle it, don't share your personal information on social media such as Snapchat or Facebook.
